2024 game changer series - Seminar #2

Join us for the next instalment of the TRI Game Changer Seminar Series for 2024.

Professor Jennifer Martin, is President and Chair of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and Chair of Clinical Pharmacology, The University of Newcastle, and will speak about  ‘Equity and Access to Health – Reflections from a Philosophy, Political and Economic Perspective’.

Our society’s culture, laws and institutions dictate political, economic and social constructs that guide the distributions of benefits across our people. In health, debates about which constructs and/or resulting distributions are morally preferable (distributive justice) are often aligned with different political preferences or personal beliefs and may not always be in alignment with the Hippocratic oath, clinical teachings, nor the resultant allocation of healthcare resources. Further, laws, institutions and policies may not be representative of all in society, particularly those with special needs or groups vulnerable due to literacy, socioeconomic status or dispossession.

In this lecture, using equity and access to pharmaceuticals as an example and through the lens of a practicing clinician facing this ethical/clinical/legal/regulatory and financial interface daily, we consider how principles of distributive justice, which technically provide moral guidance for those structures that affect the distribution of benefits in Australia, can be considered. This is important in light of the increasing gap in equity and access to health across Australia.

Professor Martin is a clinical pharmacologist and physician, and the Chair of Clinical Pharmacology in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle. In addition to her substantive role with the University of Newcastle, Professor Martin has been seconded from her clinical role as a Senior Staff Specialist at John Hunter Hospital to lead the clinical pharmacology aspects of the development and implementation of the NSW Health Statewide Medicines Formulary, within the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC). Prof Martin is also Director of the University Centre for Drug Repurposing and Medicines Research; Director of the NSW Cancer Council Pathways Program (PREDICT) and Director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Cannabinoids (ACRE). In her role as Director of PREDICT she has brought together a NSW-led but Australian team of clinical and science pharmacologists and oncologists now working with international groups to undertake research into efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness and feasibility of using individualized dose and drug choice in in clinical practice to improve cancer outcomes.
