2024 Game Changer Series - Seminar #1

Join us for the first instalment of the TRI Game Changer Seminar Series for 2024.

Professor Steve Wesselingh FRACP FAHMS, Chief Executive Officer at the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), will unpack for us the ‘Future direction of the NHMRC’Professor Wesselingh oversees strategic investment in health and medical research, evidence-based health advice and the ethical practice and conduct of medical research, including improving gender equality in health and medical research.

The NHMRC is the nation’s leading expert body in health and medical research. In this thought-provoking session, Professor Wesselingh will provide insight into some of the recent NHMRC initiatives. With climate change being one of the most pressing threats to human health and wellbeing globally, Professor Wesselingh will discuss the research they are prioritising into climate-related health risks to help provide a comprehensive understanding of emerging threats. In turn, it is hoped national resilience to environmental change. He will also talk about the work being done to improve gender balance in grant outcomes and other important national health and medical initiatives.

Professor Wesselingh is an infectious diseases physician and researcher. He undertook his undergraduate and doctoral training at Flinders University and his post-doctoral training at Johns Hopkins in the United States. Until July 2023, Professor Wesselingh was the inaugural Executive Director of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). He was also a member of NHMRC Council, Chair of Research Committee, and the President of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS).
