BRF Update - July 2021
We have a number of important updates – animal order delays this week, forecasts required for planning for the closure of ARC and changes to the animal order submission process (these can now be completed by Mosaic).
ARC orders delayed this week
Please see update from UQBR admin as follows:
Apologies for the short notice but we have just been informed that all orders coming from ARC this Wednesday 26.7.21 and Thursday 27.7.21 will have to be shifted to the following day. E.g.: Wednesday orders will come Thursday and Thursday orders will come on Friday.
Please let me know if this is NOT ok for you as we understand that there are research and facility plans that need to be pre-arranged prior to receiving the animals.
If no reply is received before 2pm today, we will book in the animals accordingly as above. Please feel free to recirculate this email if you see so necessary.
Again, we do apologise for the short notice and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly on 0424161986.
Thanks,
Giovanni Bernal Carrillo

ARC animal order forecasts
Please see the following important communication from UQBR Director Kevin Wathen-Dunn
As you will hopefully be aware, The Animal Resources Centre (ARC) in Western Australia will be closing its operations in 12-18 months.
UQ is investigating solutions to ensure continued Laboratory Animal supply, with three main focus points;
- Existing ARC supply (over the next 12-18 months)
- Interim supply (the gap between existing and a long-term solution)
- Long-term supply (a National solution to replace ARC)
ARC have historically maintained their animal production levels to support on-demand supply, despite long lead times for breeding setups (4-12 weeks depending on available animals) and short notice periods for orders (1-2 weeks). This has been of significant benefit to the Australian research community. However, this creates operational inefficiencies in that demand may not always match supply, which has partly led to their existing financial position.
Following recent discussions with ARC, they are needing to wind back their production to only meet known needs moving forward. We will be needing all groups to provide a breakdown of what their needs are for the next 18 months ( to end of 2022). I need to stress a few points;
- These are not orders, but a planning structure
- This is to ensure ARC can effectively manage its supply during operational winddown. Inefficiencies here, may expedite the closure.
- We are not likely to see “spare stock” available for ad hoc orders.
Attached is a template for all Lab Groups to complete. It is vital UQBR receive this information by the 06/08/21. Completed forms can be forwarded to UQBR Orders [email protected] ASAP.
Once received, the UQBR Orders team will collate it into a single UQ submission. I can appreciate that this is a difficult request for many labs. Certainly if you have any questions please contact myself or your Facility Manager.
Thank you for your assistance as we navigate this unexpected change,
Kevin

Animal ordering via Mosaic
Please see information from the UQBR database administrators as follows:
Please find attached information regarding the transition from the current UQ Biological Resources online Animal Ordering and Transfers form to the placement of Orders and Transfer requests within the Mosaic database.
6 Weeks to Go!
The UQ Biological Resources animal ordering system is changing! You can now order your animals directly via Mosaic.
As of COB Friday 3rd September 2021 the Biological Resources Animal Order Request Form will no longer be available.
All Animal Orders previously placed through this form will now be placed directly into the Mosaic Database.
All personnel requesting to purchase animals will require a Mosaic login to order animals.
Please ensure that you have completed Mosaic Researcher Access Level 1 and Level 1.2 (links provided in the PDF)
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
