Clinician - A collective term referring to any individual working within a clinical setting and having direct contact with patients, including but not limited to Doctors, Nurses, Specialists and Carers.

Diabetes - The family of diseases called Diabetes is characterised by the presence of too much sugar, or blood glucose, in the blood. There are several different types of diabetes, with a variety of causes, and these are often confused.

Diabetes (Type 1) - A disease which prevents the pancreas from producing any insulin at all, requiring regular prick-tests and injections of insulin to balance all carbohydrates eaten.

Diabetes (Type 2) - A disease which impacts the way the body processes sugar (glucose) and can often be managed with diet and limited insulin.

Diabetes (Gestational) - Pregnancy can alter the way the body processes food in order to feed the baby, which can result in gestational diabetes.

ECHO Model or Project ECHO - The heart of the ECHO model is its hub-and-spoke knowledge-sharing networks, led by expert teams who use multi-point videoconferencing to conduct virtual clinics with community providers.

Force Multiplication - A term used in education which allows for expedited learning through viral teaching. By sharing knowledge amongst key groups and facilitating ways of passing that knowledge on, the process of force multiplication is born. A force multiplier refers to a technology, process or physical landmark which facilitates this process.

GP (General Practitioner) - Definition

Gardasil - The vaccine for HPV developed by Professor Ian Frazer, founder of the Translational Research Institute. The process for developing the drug inspired the TRI with $1.5B spent on the overall research, patents, development, commercialisation and marketing before the final product could be made available to women.

Patient - In the language of a research institution, patient refers to anyone currently with a condition undergoing treatment or anyone with the potential to be undergoing treatment in the future. The term patient can often be taken to mean 'everyone'.

Program - A broader research category which encompasses a range of projects which may cross over in intended or unintended ways.

Researcher - Any individual who undertakes scientific research work.

Research Team - A collective term referring to a multidisciplinary group of scientists, clinicians, specialists and patients working together on a specific project or goal.

Specialist - An individual with advanced skill and training in a particular area, commonly used to refer to a clinician who specializes in a particular patient or disease.

Technology - References to technology in TRI projects may be broad and can mean medical equipment or processes developed to use that equipment. Technology can range from treatments, equipment used to deliver treatments, diagnostic and educational processes.
