Medicine and Language: How the term “placebo” can apply to communication
Emeritus Professor Roland Sussex,
Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation & School of Language and Cultures,
The University of Queensland
It is increasingly recognised that a healthcare consultation itself (rather than a particular medication or procedure) can have beneficial effects on patient outcomes. But how do we go about trying to understand and analyse these interactions?
In this presentation, Emeritus Professor Roland Sussex will explore the importance of communication between health care professionals and patients, particularly with respect to their symptoms such as pain. He will consider whether the term “placebo” can capture some of the therapeutic effects of healthcare.
