AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCIENCES

The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) was officially launched last week in Canberra, with researchers from TRI partner institutes taking on significant roles within the academy. 

Led by TRI founder, Professor Ian Frazer, the academy brings together Australia’s best medical minds providing independent guidance to industry, government and the community in the areas of evidence based medical practice and research. 

University of Queensland Deputy Vice-Chancellor of research, Professor Robyn Ward, also has an executive role with nine UQ researchers joining them as fellows. 

Awarded the 2006 Australian of the Year for his part in developing a cervical cancer vaccine, Professor Frazer knows that Australian medical and health science is among the best in the world. 

“Academy fellows have mapped the genetic basis of epilepsy, provided a treatment that has the potential to stop rheumatoid arthritis in its tracks, developed a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, made significant advances in the management of obesity in children, and ensured better outcomes for patients in intensive care units.  

“The Academy looks forward to working with the other Australian learned academies, government and industry to guide the optimal development of our health care system for future generations.”
