TRI welcomes Microba
The Translational Research Institute welcomes Microba as the latest early stage company to base part of its operations out of the TRI building.
Microba is a microbial genomics company which provides customers with access to cutting edge technology to analyse their gut microbiome. Customers can order a 'do-at-home' kit and send it back to the lab where Microba uses advanced metagenomic sequencing to give a greater understanding of their gut microbiome; showing what microorganisms are present and what they can do to improve their gut health. The Microba Insight™ test in the only test in Australia that provides a whole picture of what is happening in the gut microbiome. Conventional testing at this point sequences only a small part of a single bacterial gene.
Founded by Prof Gene Tyson and Prof Philip Hugenholz and headed by CEO Blake Wills, the company has moved from strength to strength since its beginnings with UQ's iLab program.
Prof Gene Tyson said that we have 38 trillion bacteria living on and in our bodies all playing a role in our health and well-being. Microba hope to use their technology to continue to find more connections between what bacteria we lack or are presenting with and what this might mean for our health and predisposition to particular diseases.
