Cervical Cancer Eradication on the Horizon
Australia is well on its way to being the first country to eliminate cervical cancer thanks to the Gardasil vaccine.
Research published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases has shown a steep decline in the rates of HPV, which causes 99.9% of cervical cancers, predicting that in 40 years’ time cervical cancer will be eliminated in Australia.
TRI based Professor Ian Frazer from UQ (co-inventor of the Gardasil Vaccine) tipped his hat to the Australian Government that made the vaccine freely available to school children.
There are 1000 cases of cervical cancer a year currently withi that rate expected decrease to just a few in 30-40 years time. In the past 10 years HPV rates in 18-24 year olds have also dropped from 22.7 percent to 1.1 per cent.
