2019 Translational Research Symposium Wrap Up
The 2019 Translational Research Symposium was a huge success with over 400 attendees participating across both days. The event began with a welcome from TRI CEO and Director of Research, Prof Carolyn Mountford. Prof Mountford acknowledged the importance of communicating with a broader audience and advised that it is essential if you want to see your research improving our health.
“Not only do we need to interface with the clinical and commercial sector – and talk their language, we also need to gain public support for, and participation in, our research. We need public funding; philanthropic funding; clinical trial participants and an educated public that will not be swayed by the fear and ignorance that is propagated through social media”, said Prof Mountford.
Keynote speakers, Dr Nasim Amiralian from UQ AIBN gave an inspiring presentation about her work and how she’s adjusted to life in Australia since moving from Iran and also advising attendees to ‘dream big and stay committed to what you do’. Dr Amiralian also focused on how she overcame knockbacks from media outlets when they mentioned her strong accent and the journey she took to gaining back her confidence.
A record 170 posters were presented on the second day and were of an extremely high standard as were the 12 oral presentations.
$4900 in prize money was awarded at the end of the second day - congratulations to all of the winners.
